Sunday School

The Blacksburg Jewish Community Center offers a quality Jewish education to children in the New River Valley from pre-K through bar/bat mitzvah. We offer religious and Hebrew language instruction on Sunday mornings during the academic year.

We use the Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL) curriculum. The ISJL’s mission is to help Jewish communities like ours to offer quality Jewish education. Through its curriculum, your child will learn what it means to be Jewish. The school provides a 1:3 student-teacher ratio, which is particularly helpful with Hebrew instruction.

We have a Madrichim program for high school students, who serve as assistant teachers. In addition, we have a teen program. If you have a child in high school who would be interested in participating in either of these programs, please contact us for more information.

SUNDAY SCHOOL GENERAL SCHEDULE

Classes are held weekly during the academic school year.  The 2023-2024 Sunday school year will be taught in-person. We teach Jewish values, songs, and stories,  and we offer age-appropriate Judaic instruction and Hebrew lessons.

Classes will last for one and one-half hours. The first half of the class will include Judaic instruction and the second half will offer Hebrew lessons with an emphasis on prayerbook Hebrew.

For more information about any aspect of our Religious School program, including the 2023-2024 fee schedule, please contact us at info@bjccblacksburg.org .

Payments may be made in installments. Financial aid and reduced fees are available. Please contact our Treasurer.

Checks should be made out to “BJCC.” Please write “Sunday school” on your check’s memo line and send to: BJCC Treasurer, PO Box 782, Blacksburg, VA 24063, or use PayPal.

BAR AND BAT MITZVAH PLANNING

Hebrew instruction at the Sunday school prepares students to lead a Shabbat morning service. Most students also work with an individual tutor to provide intensive Bat/Bar Mitzvah instruction in leading prayers.

Ideally, families confer with the Religious School Director three years in advance of a possible Bar or Bat Mitzvah to understand the process. The Director will go over the Bar/Bat Mitzvah policy with the family.

PJ LIBRARY

In coordination with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, the BJCC sponsors the PJ Library Program for the greater Blacksburg area (including Christiansburg, Radford, and Floyd). We will enroll any Jewish child in the area, age 6 months to 8 years, for free monthly deliveries of age-appropriate Jewish books and music. Families do not need to be members of the BJCC to participate in the PJ Library.

More about the PJ Library:

PJ Library is a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation. PJ Library mails free, high-quality Jewish children’s books and music to families on a monthly basis. All families raising Jewish children are welcome to enroll.

Donating to support the PJ Library Program:

Each yearly PJ Library subscription costs the BJCC $40 per child.  If you are interested in donating to the BJCC specifically to support this program, or to offset the cost of your child’s subscription, there are three ways to donate. You may send a check to the treasurer. Please write “PJ Library” on your check’s memo line and send to: BJCC Treasurer, PO Box 782, Blacksburg, VA 24063. You may use PayPal, writing “PJ Library” in the “add special instructions” field
