High Holidays

We provide full High Holiday services each year, on Erev Rosh Hashanah, both days of Rosh Hashanah, Erev Yom Kippur (the Kol Nidrei service), Yom Kippur morning (including Yizkor), and the Yom Kippur closing service (Neilah).

If you can donate to the BJCC to help support our putting on these services, please mail a check (memo “HHD services”) to BJCC Treasurer, PO Box 782, Blacksburg, VA 24063, or use the Paypal DONATE button via the payment instructions below; please  indicate in the “Add a Note” field that your donation is for High Holiday services. We very much appreciate your generosity!

We acquired the Reform movement’s Mishkan Hanefesh machzor in 2016 and have been transitioning our High Holiday services to this prayerbook. This year, all of our High Holiday services except Rosh Hashanah Day 2 and the closing Neilah service  will use the Reform machzor. (For those two services we will continue to use the Harlow Conservative machzor.) The Reform machzors, published in 2015, have complete transliteration of the Hebrew prayers, gender-neutral translations, and extensive commentary.

Cantor Irv Gertner will again chant much of our services, with our members filling in the gaps. We are truly a congregation whose members make everything happen, including the High Holidays.

All High Holiday services will be held at the BJCC. All daytime services start at 9:30 AM, but the start times for the evening services vary, see below. There will be a children’s service before the Erev Rosh Hashanah and Erev Yom Kippur services. See below also for child care options.
