Sunday School

The Blacksburg Jewish Community Center offers a quality Jewish education to children in the New River Valley from pre-K through bar/bat mitzvah. We offer religious and Hebrew language instruction on Sunday mornings during the academic year.

We use the Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL) curriculum. The ISJL’s mission is to help Jewish communities like ours to offer quality Jewish education. Through its curriculum, your child will learn what it means to be Jewish. The school provides a 1:3 student-teacher ratio, which is particularly helpful with Hebrew instruction.

We have a Madrichim program for high school students, who serve as assistant teachers. In addition, we have a teen program. If you have a child in high school who would be interested in participating in either of these programs, please contact us for more information.

Classes are held weekly during the academic school year.  The 2021-2022 Sunday school year will be taught in-person. For everyone’s safety, all who are eligible must be vaccinated and masks are required to be worn at all times in the building.  We teach Jewish values, songs, and stories,  and we offer age-appropriate Judaic instruction and Hebrew lessons.

Classes will last for one and one-half hours. The first half of the class will include Judaic instruction and the second half will offer Hebrew lessons with an emphasis on prayerbook Hebrew.
